Alpina XD3 Biturbo
For the first time ever, Alpina have been tweaking and playing with an SUV, and the results are rather impressive. The donor vehicle is the BMW X3, however, the XD3 in Alpina guise is actually the fastest accelerating SUV with a diesel engine that you can buy. In fact, the statistics below are rather impressive to say the least: -
3.0, 6cyl, twin turbo, diesel
Power increased to 345bhp with 516lb ft torque
0-62mph 4,90 secs
Top speed 157 mph
The cost of this performance over the stock BMW X3 xDrive35d is when it comes to CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. However, the XD3 still shows a combined 41.5mpg with a CO2 of 180g/km, and this is still on a par with what you could say is its biggest rival, the Audi SQ5. The tweaked engine is married to an 8 speed auto ‘box and emits a very satisfying exhaust note (particularly at higher revs), however, the most impressive feature is what seems to be the endless torque on tap; this car goes like stink and never wants to stop!
Thankfully, the car handles extremely well also, and Alpina have cleverly managed to extract a very sporty feel from an SUV, which is quite a feat in itself. You could even describe the car as “agile” and they have modified the suspension perfectly to suit the cars characteristics. It is very well balanced and controlled at high speeds but also shows amazing manners and compliance at low speeds. Change the setting from Comfort to Sport and the car firms up somewhat; however, it is more than acceptable for daily use on UK roads.
Most importantly, the car also retains all aspects of its original X3 practicality. It remains a fundamentally useable car with a spacious cabin, massive boot, quality materials and premium badge. Priced at a notch under £55K it is not cheap, however, you could argue that the XD3 is potentially the most thrilling and complete SUV around!
