Audi Has Revealed Their Q8 Concept At The Detroit Motor Show
Audi already offer a range of 4 SUV’s to choose from with the Q2, Q3, Q5 and Q7. Now a new member of the SUV family has been revealed at the Detroit Motor Show. The Audi Q8 will be rivalling Range Rover and the Porsche Cayenne when it goes on sale next year.
Exterior and Interior Features
The Audi Q8 concept matches the Q7 on size at 5.02 metres long with a 3-metre wheelbase, but is much sportier in design with a 40 mm lower ride height. Audi are also placing themselves into the new segment of elegant SUV. Providing all the practicalities and space of an SUV without the rugged harsh lines. This is achieved on the Q8 by the sleek, sloping coupe like dropped roofline.
At the front of the Q8 the eye is immediately drawn to the huge octagonal grille surrounded by LED headlights and 23” alloy wheels that are likely to be concept only. Inside are 4 full size seats, the traditional 3 seat rear bench does not feature, but will be an option in the production model. A 12.3” Virtual Cockpit Display features along with touchscreen on the dashboard and centre console that take the place of most buttons and dials.
Audi are also answering the desire of most drivers to be more economically friendly. The Q8 is a plug-in hybrid e-Tron fitted with both a 3.0 litre turbo engine and electric motor with 17.9 kWh lithium-ion battery. The combined effects of these power sources are 438 bhp and 700 Nm of torque producing a limited top speed of 155mph and a 0-62mph time of 5.5 seconds.
Even more impressive than these figures are the reported small CO² emissions total of 53g k/m. The Q8 will be able to switch into pure electric mode with a range of 37 miles, perfect for trips around town and the battery will take only 2.5 hours to fully charge. Audi will be using their existing Quattro four-wheel drive and 8 speed automatic gearbox.
“It demonstrates the strengths of our brand in both technology and design while providing a glimpse at a future full-size production SUV. With its next generation display and control solutions, we are enabling customers to experience connectivity in a whole new way.” - Dietmar Voggenreiter, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at Audi
Prices have not yet been released but are expected to start around £60,000, for those who love performance vehicles a SQ8 version has been rumoured.
