Rivervale Review the BMW i8 Coupe
The BMW i8 is part supercar part eco-car. It races to 62mph in 4.4 seconds, while still providing the fuel economy of a family vehicle.
Our Marketing Manager Bud took a look around the BMW i8 Coupe …
BMW i8 Interior and Exterior Features
The i8 coupe has all the characteristics of a true sports car with a long wheelbase and short overhangs. It is given a futuristic twist thanks to the dihedral doors which move forwards and upwards to allow entry. The entire body features smooth, sleek lines, designed to boost aerodynamics with u-shaped LED lights at the front and rear.
20" alloy wheels come as standard with high gloss black brake calipers featuring blue BMWi accents and a tyre pressure monitoring system to keep you informed of your tyre health.
BMW's LifeDrive Architecture has been used to create the i8. The Life module is an ultralight passenger compartment and the Drive module is the aluminium chassis. The design creates a light, but incredibly strong structure, to keep fuel efficiency high.
Once you are inside, you will be in comfort with new electrically adjustable sports seats and if you have any little ones along on your journey, you will find 2 ISOFIX points in the rear of the i8. You can remain in full control with an 8.8" colour touchscreen media interface to easily navigate through the DAB radio, Head-Up display, and navigation system. Bluetooth allows you to connect your smartphone, with voice control to choose to answer or reject calls handsfree.
BMW i8 Power and Electric Range
There is a twin power Turbo three cylinder petrol engine, which complies with Euro 6 emissions standards. The petrol engine combined with the electric motor produces a maximum 374HP. The top speed of the i8 is limited to 155mph and the 0-62mph time is only 4.4 seconds.

The BMW Intelligent Management System controls the use of the electric motor to make sure maximum performance is always achieved while minimising fuel consumption. This works to make an impressively low Co2 emissions figure of 42g/km while still producing high fuel efficiency of 148.6mpg.
At a 7.2kW charging station you will be able to reach an 80% charge in under three hours. In pure electric driving mode the i8 has a range of 34 miles.
BMW Connected Services
BMW offer BMW ConnectedDrive. Through this system, you can gain access to the concierge service which provides around the clock support whether you need to book a flight or find a restaurant. Using the BMW Teleservices you can also set up reminders for service and maintenance appointments for your i8.
You can also get the BMW Connected App on your smartphone to gain remote services. From the app you can check your vehicle location, lock or unlock doors and even get walking directions to your car. Any repeatedly visited destinations will be learned, and automatically listed for you to select and send to the sat nav, at most popular times you are there. Through the BMW Connected App you could get reminders to leave, estimated times of arrival and updates on the traffic on your route. You can even configure the Connected App to work via Amazon Echo.
The starting price for the BMW i8 is £112,735. Unsurprisingly, the i8 is in insurance group 50, but that low Co2 figure means an attractive BIK rate of 13%!
