Would promising to switch off speed cameras sway your vote?
Ahead of the general election Labour have promised to bring relief to motorists all over the country so here at Rivervale Car Leasing we are dipping a toe into the world of politics! Labour have promised to
-switch off thousands of speed cameras.
-ban councils from using CCTV in areas that are not accident black spots.
-painting cameras that are not clearly visible already yellow and so getting rid of ‘stealth’ grey cameras that are not immediately noticeable. Stealth cameras have been very successful in catching speeding motorists as 1,500 motorists have been caught in the 3 months since they have been installed on the M25. These super cameras can cover all 4 lanes at once and do not need markings on the road to register drivers speed. #
-review guidelines on speed camera use.
Official figures have been released and show the number of fines are on the rise and are at the highest since 2010 with 115,000 fines of £100 or more were issued in 2014. Labour believe speed cameras should be used to encourage people to drive more safely and not as cash cows.
Labour have also been keen to point out they are not anti-speed camera as there was a 44% drop in the number of serious injuries and deaths between 1998 and 2009 after speed cameras were introduced.
This news comes as the Institute of Advanced Motorists reveals the worst ever speeding offences for 2014. The fastest speeders were both caught doing 146mph on the M25. The worst offender in a 30 mph speed restricted zone was found in East Grinstead travelling at a shocking 128 mph. So it seems even with the cameras some of us just can’t resist putting our foot down.
