Jaguar Land Rover’s Virtual Urban Windscreen

Jaguar Land Rover’s Virtual Urban Windscreen

Manufacturers are always creating new technology to wow us and Jaguar Land Rover are no exception -  their new Virtual Urban Windscreen eliminates blind spots and points to a new direction for navigation so at Rivervale car leasing we thought we had better take a look ……..

The Urban Windscreen creates more features for the already popular head up display using video projection to create a virtual moving image display.  Firstly, Jaguar Land Rover have tweaked satnav as we know it to make sure drivers are always looking ahead.  With their follow me navigation system the image of a ghost car is projected onto the windscreen ahead of you, so all you have to do is look ahead and follow the car in front…….it’s simple and perfect for those not blessed with a good sense of direction!

Blindspots are a nuisance for all drivers and are caused by A, B and C-pillars blocking the view – Jaguar Land Rover have embedded screens in the pillars that will display images from cameras at each blindspot position.  The feed from the cameras is in real time so the driver will have an unobstructed 360 degree view.  The cameras and screens will give the illusion that the pillars have disappeared.

Cars of the future will also be connected using cloud internet.  This can show the driver relevant information such as the closest available parking spaces or petrol prices at the local garages.  This means the driver spends more time looking ahead in the direction the car is moving in and so reducing the risk of distraction causing an accident.  Being connected in this way also means navigation can be enhanced by using local landmarks such as pubs or shops within navigation instead of road signs which can be much more difficult to spot.

Dr Epple director of research and technology for Jaguar Land Rover says ‘ If we can keep the drivers eyes on the road ahead and present information in a non-distracting way, we can help drivers make better decisions in the most demanding and congested driving environments’.

Sadly there is no date for when this technology will be popping up across the Jaguar Land Rover Range, but the prediction is we will see it across the range by 2020.
