The Brand New E300 Hybrid...
Mercedes E300 is the latest instalment of a hybrid that Mercedes have brought out but if it wasn’t for the badges and stickers on the back, you wouldn’t know any different.
So, let’s get down to the technicalities. Under the bonnet, it’s very much similar to the E250 with the same twin turbo diesel 2.1 litre engine and Mercedes have used the same 7 speed automatic gear box as they do on quite a lot of their models now - the gearbox will be bolted to the engine.
The secret to the E300 being so economically good, is that it will have a wet clutch, instead of a torque converter. So when you’re travelling at a coasting speed, the engine can be switched off to save fuel. The only downside to this is that because the car has a clutch it is not as smooth when you take off as it would be with a torque converter. The E300 comes with the standard E-class interior, which in itself is stunning enough. The on the road price is between £39,645 and £53,645. The top end model being rammed to the max with specification additions that most people could go without.
This isn’t a sluggish E300 either, it is capable of 0-62MPH in just under 7.5 seconds and also has a very modest top speed of 150MPH. That’s all well and good, but you are not buying the E300 for its performance, you will buy it for its superb economic performance. Here are some of the statistical points of the car-
- Diesel/Electric Hybrid
- CO2 Emissions 110 g/km
- CO2 Band B
- Combined Fuel Economy - 68.9 MPG
- 0-62MPH 7.5 Seconds
- You Could Save Up To £100 Per Month On Company Car Tax
The E-class is really a brilliant car, looks-wise, economically and most importantly the price is extremely reasonable. A definite buy.
