What is the J.D Power Survey?
Across the globe the J.D Power Survey independently assesses consumer satisfaction with a range of products and ensures these are fit for purpose.
In the car reliability survey in the UK over 13,000 drivers submitting information about any mechanical or electrical errors that had occurred with their vehicle. This is the 4th year this type of survey has been carried out and over 177 problems across 8 categories are considered. These categories include;
- Vehicle exterior
- Driving experience
- Features, controls and displays
- Audio, communication, entertainment and navigation
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning
- Vehicle interior
- Engine and transmission
J.D Power Survey results for car reliability 2018
Vehicles that are considered are all between 1 and 3 years old. For every problem encountered a standardised score is given, so the lower the score, the more reliable the vehicle. This year's results can be seen in the graph below;
The results show premium brands are slipping down the reliability scale with BMW the least reliable of all cars assessed. The reason for this is thought to be the increasing amount of technology and larger number of gadgets now inside our cars. The more technology a vehicle has, the more chances there are for a problem to occur.
