Mercedes-Benz E300 Review - The Day I Swapped Cars With The Boss!
Sitting at my desk here at Rivervale Car Leasing I started getting a bit fidgety, the need to get out and about to complete another car review was becoming overwhelming. With no car keys appearing on my desk I was a bit disheartened …………..Then I gazed out of the window and what should I see? Many, many shiny new cars all lined up in the car park! The staff here at Rivervale drive some very nice company cars! I decided to go straight to the top so approached our boss Vince and to my surprise a deal was done – the 24 hour car swap was on!!!!
While I looked forward to driving away in Vince’s car – a Mercedes-Benz E300 in Silver, Vince would be taking my car home ………a 13 year old Renault Clio that I like to call Chloe!
The differences in the cars are vast ………….
Renault Clio (Chloe)
2.1 litre/electric motor
0-62 mph in
So finishing time came and I ran out the door ......... immediate feelings of love for this Mercedes-Benz washed over me from the moment I fastened my seat belt – It gave me a little cuddle! I want to believe this is to welcome you into the car, however, it seems the true purpose of a seat belt pre-tensioner is to hold you firmly in place in the event of a collision.
Then I turned on the radio – it was tuned to radio 2, so as I accelerated away I was listening to the Spice Girls when Two Become One and wondered if this was a true reflection of Vince’s musical taste? Now firmly taken back all the way to 1996 when the Spice Girls ruled the charts I noticed nothing else in the car reflected the 90’s, there is all the modern technology you could want to make driving a breeze …………
Cruise control and speed limiter mean you are the master of your mph and will hopefully help you avoid speeding fines!
Reversing cameras along with front and rear sensors help out those of us that may find wiggling into that perfect space a little bit trickier than others.
Safety has clearly been a priority for Mercedes-Benz as it is bursting with life saving features – Attention Assist, Collision Prevention Assist, ABS with Crake Assist, Airbags at the front, for your knees, curtain and side airbags along with ESP with ASR to prevent any slips.
Automatic headlights and windscreen wipers mean you can stay focused on the road and let the car worry about the conditions.
And you can connect and get anywhere there is built in Sat-Nav and Bluetooth with an interface for talking on that phone handsfree!
…………….the only throwback I did notice aside from the music was the clock! No digital display here I loved this retro look it added yet more class to the already very classy Mercedes-Benz.
Now the Mercedes-Benz E300 was just a tad bigger than my usual Clio, in fact it overhung my parking space at home and on the school run it is not ideal for squeezing into the little tiny gaps that always seem to be the only ones left. However the bonus of the size is you will never be short on space, the boot is huge and even in the back 3 adults wouldn’t feel squashed in. On the school run at least you would be in a great looking car while blocking the road!
There were a few confusions for me in the Mercedes-Benz, the handbrake is not where you would expect it to be – it’s on the floor? And a gearstick, no forget it, you change gears via gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. These brilliant changes do limit the time your hands need to leave the wheel they just take a little bit of getting used to!
For comfort Mercedes-Benz really have got everything covered – cup holders, seat position can be adjusted in every way possible, lights on visor mirrors for the all-important last makeup check, seats are heated, reading lights in the rear, a light in the glove box and dual zone climate control this car really is ideal for making long journeys a bit more bearable.
On the road this car is incredibly smooth I felt like I was gliding not driving, the speed sensitive power steering meant an easily manoeuvrable wheel at low speed and a firmer wheel at high speed leaving you confident you are always in control. It was an automatic which is amazing in traffic say goodbye to that aching left leg!
You can also pat yourself on the back if you drive the Mercedes-Benz E300 as it is a hybrid so you are cutting your emissions and saving the environment!
If you want to lease it like Vince the Mercedes-Benz E300 is available for Business Contract Hire and Personal Contract Hire ………
E300 BlueTEC Hybrid SE 4dr 7G-Tronic
Business contract hire £348.00 + VAT per month Initial rental: £2088.00 + VAT
Personal contract hire £417.60 per month Initial rental: £2505.60
As I was so thankful that Vince has agreed to the car swap I thought it was only fair I leave him a few reminders that I had been there …………..Hope Mrs Vince is in a forgiving mood!!!!!!!!
So what did Vince make of my little Chloe? There were very few words that would leave Vince’s mouth on this subject but here’s what I got ………. He was impressed with the air conditioning and he said ‘it goes alright’ He was a little concerned about the rattling from the roof and ended up with shaky clutch leg …….. I think the word you are looking for Vince is vintage !!!!!!
