Rivervale Celebrates School Students Success at Award Ceremony

Rivervalejoined leading figures from businesses, education and the public sector to celebrate the achievements of 80 students from Brighton and Hove schools at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 28 at the University of Sussex.

The event was the grand finale to the ‘Be the Change’ programme, an initiative to boost the aspirations and job prospects of young people aged between 13 and 14. Over the last four months the students have been taking part in a series of activities designed to improve hope, happiness, confidence, relationships, to change negative behaviour and to introduce them to job and career opportunities.

The students come from 10 secondary schools in the city: Cardinal Newman Catholic School, Dorothy Stringer High School, Hove Park School, Longhill High School, Portslade Aldridge Community Academy, Brighton Aldrighe Community Academy, Varndean, Patcham High School, Blatchington Mill School and Sir Robert Woodard Academy. They worked with business volunteers on six occasions during the school year at a mixture of day long events, one-to-one mentoring sessions and workplace visits.

Bud Johnston, Marketing Manager has played an active role in the ‘Be the Change’ programme. He said: “Rivervale are proud to be involved in a local community project and hope we can continue to support the important work of Be The Change in future years”

There are three ‘Be the Change’ programmes currently rolling out across Brighton & Hove and East and West Sussex. The Brighton and Hove programme is a collaboration between LoveLocalJobs.com, humanutopia, Sussex Learning Network, Brighton & Hove City Council, Coast to Capital LEP, The Careers and Enterprise Company, Heart FM and University of Sussex, along with support from local businesses like Rivervale.

Gary Peters, MD of LoveLocalJobs.com and co-founder of ‘Be the Change’ said: “It’s a harsh world out there for young people and many of the students on ‘Be the Change’ have already had to face challenges that most of us couldn’t imagine. Our aim is to help them to value both themselves and other people and to develop skills which will enable them to take responsibility for their lives and ambitions.”
