The Car That Parks Itself...
Swedish car giant Volvo has shown off a new technology that will allow a driver to park their car using only their mobile phone with a specially designed app.
Volvo’s "Autonomous Parking " concept combines sensors and cameras with a system that controls the steering, brakes and other functions to guide the car into any suitable available space.
The system will also detect pedestrians and other cars for "smooth integration in the parking environment".
Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor for the Volvo Cars Group has said: "Autonomous Parking is a concept technology that relieves the driver of the time-consuming task of finding a vacant parking space. The driver just drops the vehicle off at the entrance to the car park and picks it up in the same place later."
The Volvo system relies on "Vehicle 2 Infrastructure technology" - transmitters in the road infrastructure - to find an available space. Volvo says the technology could be available for the new XC90, which is due on sale in late 2014.
