The Ford Edge has Arrived in the UK!
The Ford Edge has finally made its way across the Atlantic! Here is everything you need to know, including our test drive featuring Lewis Hatchett and Tony Cottey from Sussex County Cricket Club …
Ford have treated us all in the UK recently giving us access to two new models not previously available. We have previously brought you our review on the Mustang, now we have been taking a look at the Edge.
Lewis Hatchett and Tony Cottey took the Ford Edge 2.0 TDCi Sport Powershift out for a spin!
The Edge sits at the top of the Ford SUV range with 4 trim levels to choose from; Zetec, Titanium, Sport and the extra special Vignale. As ever with Ford each and every model is packed full of the latest technology.
The Ford Edge Zetec is the entry level trim and for such a large car it has a surprisingly nippy 0-62 mph time of 9.9 seconds and an equally impressive 48.7 combined mpg. To achieve this mpg, stop/start technology is present along with Smart Regenerative Charging. Here, the battery is only charged when necessary, not continually, helping to save fuel and reduce emissions. Another helping hand comes from the Active Grille Shutter. The front grille vent is open to cool the engine but will automatically close at high speeds to keep the Edge aerodynamic and save a little more fuel.
Saving fuel does not come at the expense of driving enjoyment. The Ford Edge features advanced suspension. Multi-link rear suspension and an enhanced McPherson Strut front suspension which are tuned specifically for the height and width of the edge to provide refined ride quality and deliver optimal wheel control.
The Ford Edge also aims to make driving as effortless and safe as possible. Adaptive Cruise Control keeps your speed steady with Forward Alert lights where the dash meet the windscreen to let you know if you are too close the vehicle in front. If you don’t act upon this warning the Edge will slow down for you. Traffic Sign Recognition makes sure you never miss an important piece of information on your journey. The Lane keeping System will make the steering wheel vibrate and display a visual warning if you veer out of your lane, if you fail to respond you will be gently steered back on course. Intelligent Speed Assist may be your best defence against exceeding the speed limit (and avoiding a fine!) as it will recognise road signs and automatically adjust your maximum speed level for you. The Edge has your blind spots covered too with Blindspot Information System, displaying an orange light on the side door mirror when there is an object approaching. The same lights also help when reversing out of a parking space. The Cross Traffic Alert System you will notify you if there is another vehicle approaching, meaning you avoid any nasty car park bumps.
Pre-Collision Assist and Pedestrian Detection identify objects in the Edge’s pathway and will automatically brake for you if you fail to do so yourself. Active City Stop will monitor vehicles ahead and break for you to avoid a collision or reduce speed as much as possible to reduce the impact of a collision if it is unavoidable. With Driver Alert the Edge will monitor your driving and if any signs of fatigue are found a warning icon will let you know it’s time to take a break. A Rear View Camera reduces the risk of any mishaps when travelling backwards and Hill Start Assist gives you an extra 2.5 seconds to get ready to go. Any precious passengers in the rear seats also have a new level of safety with the Edge’s Rear Inflatable Seatbelts. In the event of a crash situation the rear seat belts will inflate to spread any force of a collision over a 5x larger area reducing the risk of injury.
The Ford Edge also ensures you rarely need to take your hands of the steering wheel with Keyless Entry and Start, Bluetooth connection, automatic headlights, automatic windscreen wipers, automatic low and high beams and voice control – just tell the Edge you are hungry and it will gather a list of nearby restaurants for you!
Ford MyKey and Ford Emergency Assistance also come as standard. If you upgrade to the Titanium trim you will gain Front and Rear Parking Sensors, Ford DAB Digital Navigation System, Heated Front Sports Seats and my favourite feature the Hands-Free Tailgate. Simply wave your foot under the sensor at the rear of the Edge and as if by magic the boot will open! The Sport model of the Ford Edge includes 20” Black Alloy wheels, unique sports body styling, alloy pedals and Ford’s Adaptive Steering System. If only the very best is good enough for you then the Vignale trim is for you with handcrafted finishes and premium materials for the most luxurious drive.
