The Volkswagen Transporter Van Turns 60!
We are a nation of Volkswagen lovers here in the UK and this year the Volkswagen Transporter turns 60! So for all our van leasing customers we are taking a look at where it all began, join us for a trip down memory lane!
The first transporter
It all began in a Volkswagen factory when Major Ivan Hirst ordered the creation of a flatbed vehicle to carry parts around. A Beetle was modified to take on this task and the vehicle became known as the Plattenwagen. Ben Pon was visiting and saw the potential in the Plattenwagen so with only 13 months from drawing board to finished product, the T1 with its unique split front windscreen was born.
The T1 becomes available in the UK
The T1 was first seen here in the UK at the Earls Court Commercial Vehicle Show, when it became available in 1964, 786 were sold, in comparison in 2013 18,350 were sold! The T1, T2 and T3 all followed the same rear engine design and featured the same air cooling system. This all changed in 1990 when the T4 was launched with a front engine, front wheel drive and more modern water cooling system. The T4 was only replaced by the current model the T5 in 2003.
VW Transporters have maintained popularity, used here in the UK over the years as Ambulances and Fire Support Vehicles, but it’s not just us Brits who love them globally total sales stand at 11.5 million. The T1 also gave rise to many variants that are in themselves iconic vehicles, buses, pick-up trucks and the instantly recognisable VW camper.
To celebrate such a successful 60 years Volkswagen are releasing a special edition called the Sportline 60. It will be available in long or short wheelbase, as a kombi or a panel van and will have unique 18 inch five spoke Anthracite alloy wheels. There are 3 colour choices – metallic reflex silver, deep black or candy white with a deep black roof! Inside there is a Kenwood sat-nav infotainment system and front and rear parking sensors with camera to help guide you on your way.
With the practicality of the VW transporter combined with high tech features and a high level of quality I’m sure they will still be around in another 60 years! But quality doesn’t have to mean a high price tag. The Volkswagen Transporter is a great value leasing choice for your business.
