How to top up your AdBlue Guide

The Rivervale guide on how to top your AdBlue

If you're a diesel car owner and you've had it for a couple of years, you may need to eventually top up your AdBlue. Read on for all the answers ...

What is Adblue for?

AdBlue is used in diesel engines to reduce the amount of harmful emissions released into the atmosphere.

The onboard computer in your car will let you know when AdBlue is running low and it's time to top up. AdBlue consumption will vary depending on the number of miles travelled, driving style and driving conditions.

For example, a car which is only ever driven in stop/start city traffic conditions is likely to use more AdBlue than one driven on clear country roads. It may be that the mileage you drive means you never need to top up the AdBlue tank yourself, as this will be done at every service for you.

However, if your vehicle runs out of AdBlue it may fail to start, or will start in 'limp mode' with reduced function until AdBlue supplies are replenished.

Topping up your AdBlue can easily be done at home, and here's how ...

How to top up your Adblue?

1. A bottle of AdBlue. Adblue is sold at most garages and car accessory shops in 1.5, 5 and 10 litre containers.

2. Gloves. Although AdBlue is not a harmful substance it can cause irritation, so gloves are recommended.

Step 1: Locate your AdBlue tank

The most common place is right next to your diesel filler cap, although the AdBlue filler cap could also be found under the bonnet or in the boot.

It will be clearly marked and most likely blue in colour. If you are struggling to find your AdBlue filler cap refer to your manufacturers handbook.

Step 2: Attach funnel to your Adblue container

The majority of AdBlue containers will come with a funnel to attach to make filling up easy and mess free.

Step 3: Fill up as required Pour in AdBlue as needed

The size of AdBlue tanks varies from manufacturer to manufacturer so you will need to refer to your handbook or check online to know how much AdBlue you will need.

Step 4: Wash your hands and rinse any spills

If you have spilt any AdBlue onto the surface of your car, make sure you rinse it off as it could damage the paintwork.

Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly to avoid any irritation.

What should I do if I have poured AdBlue into the incorrect tank?

Never pour AdBlue into the diesel tank as this will cause serious damage to your engine.

If you have accidently done this do not turn on your engine.

Turning on your engine will circulate the AdBlue and cause more damage.

Make sure you call a professional who can come and drain the diesel tank and assess the damage.

Can I store any unused AdBlue?

If you have topped up your tank and still have AdBlue remaining in the container, it can be stored for up to 1 year.

AdBlue needs to be kept out of direct sunlight and between 0 - 30°C. It is also important to keep AdBlue tightly sealed and in a dust free environment to avoid any contamination.

If you are not confident, do not top up your AdBlue yourself - make sure you contact a trained professional.
