Midas was designed by Hampshire County Council, who still hold the rights to it. HCC still control the scheme within Hampshire, however, the outside of the county MiDAS is operated by Community Transport Association (CTA).
MiDAS is a nationally recognised scheme many councils and academy groups insist on before allowing staff to drive a minibus. It must be borne in mind that this is a voluntary scheme and does not give a driver any legal entitlement to drive a minibus and will not add a category to the driver's licence.
The training can only be delivered by MiDAS accredited Driver Assessor Trainers (DATs). These DATs, once qualified, must have refresher training every two years.
Any organisation wishing to benefit from this training must first register as a member of the scheme, once you have registered you will be issued with a MiDAS number, you will need this number before any training can take place. You can register for free by simply visiting ctauk.org
The scheme is designed for anyone driving or about to start driving a minibus, even experienced drivers will gain from the experience, at the very least confirmation that they are a good driver.
The training will take a day and comprises both theoretical and practical elements.

The day will usually start with the theory training, this is delivered by means of an interactive presentation and will cover aspects including; licences, vehicle checks, eco-driving and emergency situations. There will be plenty of opportunities for the delegates to ask questions. There then follows a multiple-choice assessment paper of 20 questions. Nothing to worry about all the answers are in the presentation.
Once the Theory session is completed there is an on-road practical driving assessment. While this is an assessment the trainer will at times give guidance to help the candidate achieve the required standard. The assessment will include some reversing and a variety of driving conditions.
The aim of the course is that by the end of it the delegated will be confident and comfortable in a minibus, driving with the skills and knowledge to ensure passenger and driver comfort and most importantly safety.
