The High Performance Polestar 1
The production version of the Polestar 1 has been unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show and is now available to order ready for a 2019 delivery.
Who are Polestar?
Polestar began as the motorsport arm of Volvo in 1996 and are now best known as producers of performance versions of Volvo models such as the S60 and V60.
In October 2017 it was announced that Polestar would become an independent part of the Volvo group producing electric vehicles.
The Polestar 1
The first vehicle from Polestar was introduced in production form at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The Polestar 1 is a high performance hybrid GT and will be manufactured in China at a purpose built factory which was only completed mid 2018. Production of the Polestar 1 will start in 2019 with deliveries beginning later in the year.
Polestar is launching a new alternative to ownership with their first model in the form of a subscription service. Customers will pay a fixed monthly fee for use of the Polestar 1; this fee will include servicing and maintenance, insurance, roadside assistance, pick up and delivery, giving customers the chance to combine all their car related payments into one payable sum.
These subscriptions will last for 2 or 3 years and then the car is handed back and a new subscription taken. Polestar believe this better reflects the way people now want to pay for their cars and will provide a hassle free way to get on the road.
All ordering will also be 100% online, there will be no showrooms to visit to purchase the Polestar 1, but there will be Polestar spaces where products are displayed and where you can meet and talk to Polestar experts.
Polestar 1 - exterior features
The Polestar 1 has a classic coupe shape with a low, sloping roofline and elegant curves. At the rear there is an active spoiler which will remain in the flush position until the vehicle reaches around 60mph when it will rise to provide downforce on the rear axle. The rear spoiler will then retract once the speed lowers to below 40mph.
There is a fixed, glass panoramic roof with runs the length of the vehicle with the Polestar projected onto it. There is a choice of 6 exterior colours to choose from; Space, Snow, Midnight, Osmium, Osmium Matte and Magnesium.
Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) is used to make the majority of the exterior panels on the Polestar 1 including the doors, boot and bonnet . CFRP provides strength, rigidity and maximum stiffness whilst remaining light.
The underside of the body between the middle floor and the rear is a known weak spot, to overcome this, CFRP has been cut into a unique shape called the 'dragonfly' and bonded to the steel structure of the underbody to increase strength.
Polestar 1 - interior features
On the inside you will find handcrafted leather details, a Bower and Wilkins sound system and a dashboard layout with the same infotainment system as the S90 and V90.
There are a couple of differences to note: there will only be 500 models made a year, so due to the small production volume all models will be left hand drive. Additional technology might appear in the Polestar 1 in the form of 'phone as key' technology. This allows you to send a key which can open and start the Polestar 1 to your mobile phone or someone else's mobile phone if they are borrowing your car.
There are 4 seats, but the rear seats will only really be suitable for children to travel in any kind of comfort!
Polestar 1 - engine and performance
The Polestar 1 contains 3 batteries, with 3 electric motors and a high performance four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine. With electric and petrol power combined the Polestar 1 produces 600hp and 1000Nm of torque, exact figures have yet to be released but with all that power the 0-60mph time will be under 4 seconds.
The Polestar 1 is a plug-in hybrid with an all electric range in the region of 93 miles.
The value of the car is £135,000. To pre order your model a refundable deposit of 2,500 Euros is required.
