How to Keep Your Car in Tip Top Condition

How to Keep Your Car in Tip Top Condition

Cars are great, they look cool, get you to and from places and keep you out of the rain when the weather is acting up. There are a few things you should do to your car to keep it running in top condition and looking as fresh as ever. Let’s talk about a few of them.

Keeping Your Car Clean

Wash your car regularly, aside from keeping it looking new and shiny, it also helps protect the paintwork. Not washing your car for a long time means the paintwork can become stained and rusty a lot quicker than it would with you washing it. I’m not saying every week your car needs a full valet, but even just a simple hose down will get the majority of the dust and dirt off left behind from rain etc. Then you can give it a proper wash and vacuum whenever it’s necessary.

As well as this, with your car all clean, there is no embarrassment when picking up your mates for a road trip in a filthy car full of fast food wrappers in the back seats, (which I do admit, mine was like for some time when I first started driving).

There are many different ways people tell you to clean your car, however one tip which stays the same through every different tutorial you’ll see on YouTube, is to start from the top and work your way down. This way you won’t get as many, if any, drip marks running down the bodywork which leaves streaks.

Something else that I found was highly suggested was using a microfibre washing mitt. Two of them in fact, one for washing your paintwork and one for your alloy wheels. This is because there are a lot more metal particles and dirt in your alloys which may then scratch your paintwork if you washed it with the same mitt.

General Maintenance

It’s funny to think that a few drops of a specific oil can be the difference between your vehicle running smoothly or sounding like a broken lawn mower. These fluids can be anything such as oil, coolant or screen wash. We made videos on how to check if these need topping up and how to top them up, check them out.

Don’t forget that you should check your oil levels monthly and when the engine is cold (unless the manufacturer suggests your engine is warmed up before checking your oil levels).

Your car was built to be driven, not left around getting all rusty and dusty on the driveway. Driving your car often will keep all parts in working order. Make sure you drive your car within its limits. For example, don't always accelerate as fast as you can and dont rev too high when the engine is still cold. So stay in a higher gear when possible if the engine is still cold. Don't let this stop you enjoying your vehicle though. Anyway, what is the point in having it, if you are not going to enjoy it?

In summary, take care of your car to keep it looking fresh, running efficiently and so that you won’t be worried about faults cropping up. Of course, the more miles you do in your vehicle, the quicker that you will go through oil and coolant etc. This is just a rough guide on when you should be checking everything.
